Welcome to Forest Heath
Sitting on the Suffolk/Cambridgeshire border,
Forest Heath is a beautiful rural district with a diverse landscape.
The market towns of Newmarket, Mildenhall and Brandon, along with the 22 villages in the surrounding countryside, have plenty to offer visitors.
Newmarket
Newmarket is internationally renowned for being the historic home of horseracing and still houses the National Stud. It is a busy market town with a vibrant collection of cafes, restaurants, public houses and nightclubs. The town is located amongst attractive rolling chalk heathland and is surrounded by numerous stable yards and gallops.
Mildenhall
Mildenhall is a pretty, mediaeval town with strong links to the US air force, having both the Lakenheath and Mildenhall air bases on its doorstep. The town boasts an historic Market Cross and pump, whilst St Mary's church is one of the finest in Suffolk. The town's museum holds a replica of 4th century Roman silver tableware discovered in the area in 1942.Brandon
Brandon, in Anglo-Saxon times, was the lowest convenient crossing of the
Little Ouse river. It has many distinctive flint and brick buildings and
was responsible for supplying over a million musket flints a month in the
early 1900s. More recently when rabbit fur became fashionable, it was the
centre of the British fur trade.
Thetford Forest
Surrounding Brandon is Thetford Forest, which lies at the heart of the Brecks,
an area of special beauty with heathland, forests, nature reserves and outstanding
wildlife. Here you can enjoy trekking, orienteering, rough track cycling, husky
racing or just pure enjoyment of the forest-scape.
